Add Some Sizzle to Your Notebooks!

One way to add hands-on fun to homeschooling is to use notebooks. Even if you are using a set curriculum such as ABEKA or Bob Jones, you can do notebooks. A biology notebook for example would include pictures, lab sheets, drawings, and anything else you can think to add that puts the students in charge.

Adding Some Sparkle!

Younger kids love notebooks. And one way to keep them from becoming stale – printed out pages and coloring sheets only is to let the children spice it up. You can include many scrap booking techniques in your homeschooling notebooks that will add spark and sizzle.

At one point in time die cut machines were cost a $1,000 or more and were only found in schools. Not so anymore. The scrap booking rage has brought about the personal die cut machines such as the Sizzix machines. Even the larger machines such as the Ellison Prestige are affordable for small groups or families. And the good news is they are not just for scrap booking!

ABC”S

There are many ways you can use a die cut machine to add to your homeschool notebooks. One of the basics is with the alphabet. Posters, divider pages for the notebooks, timelines and notebook covers will look great with die cut letters used rather than hand lettering. Older kids enjoy the professional look that the die cut letters bring to the project and they can cut them out themselves.

Make it Stand Out

You can make three dimensional projects and pages by using the frames and pop-up dies you can purchase. Biography pages look great with a die cut frame around the picture of the person they are writing on. Add some squiggly lines or appropriate die cut shapes to complete the page. Add animal dies cuts to nature notebooks. Let the kids decorate the animals or cut them out of animal skin scrap booking paper. Use the grass and tree dies to add background and you have a beautiful nature notebook page.

History Happenings

One of the areas that you can really bring to life with the Sizzix or Ellison machine is your history notebook. The biography pages like we talked about earlier will look great but timeline figures become FUN! You can use the paper doll dies in so many ways. Cut out your person and some clothes, and you have your own personalized timeline figure. Get creative. A few snips to a dress and you have a toga. Sandals work for Romans, Greeks and biblical figures. A few adjustments to the bathrobe and you have Joseph or Moses’ robe. Use markers, paints or yarn to add your own special techniques.

Use Your Imagination

Let your imagination run wild! It will only take a few minutes working on one idea before others will start to flow. And check back here for upcoming columns on fun crafts and educational ideas that all start with your Sizzix or Ellison machine.
