Painting Surfaces
Painting surfaces can be as traditional as canvas or wood, or as creative as the painting itself when using paper, glass, or even my favorite painting surface - stretched chiffon. If you tend to use more unconventional materials you may have already considered its special preparation, based upon your particular painting needs. However, if you will be painting on traditional canvas or wood, your surface will need to be properly prepared not only for preservation reasons, but also because your surface will set the underlying professional appearance of your painting. An improperly stretched or sloppy canvas can ruin the presence of an entire painting, regardless of how well it is painted.

Writing About Painting
Thoughts on writing and painting, with an exercise for you!

Paint with love
After 10 years of painting and teaching I still find that the most joy is in painting something that is a gift from the heart. Preparing projects for class and painting a commissioned piece are always pressure paintings. For commissions there are the questions of did I get the colours right, have I quoted appropriately for the cost and will they like it. Does my minds eye have the right image of what the client wanted? For students there are 'will this be a popular piece, is there enough learning within it, is it within the grasp of students who will book into it.' Alternatively if you paint for selling at markets the feeling might be 'how many more of these cows do I have to paint?'However when I paint something from the heart, something for someone that is a gift, none of these issues matter much.

The art of painting freehand and some very good reasons for teaching it.
Yikes…I have used that word! “Freehand” you exclaim! “But I use patterns.”  Yes you probably do, but have you ever stopped to consider that you can do this freehand too? Your pattern is a guide to follow. In some designs the best results are achieved by following the pattern accurately – especially with faces. But for stroke work florals the story is quite different. You are often confined by a pattern and its lines and you need not be.

The Decorative Painting Teacher.
I have been involved in many a discussion about what ‘qualifies’ one to teach decorative painting. There is no easy answer to the question and I sincerely believe that we should not be looking for ‘qualified’ teachers. We ought to be looking for more than a piece of paper that says 'qualified'.
