Early New England Print Works: Cocheco

In the last quarter of the 18th century, Philadelphia became the first textile center in America. Benjamin Franklin brought John Hewson, a printer and designer over from England where he set up shop in Philadelphia ("Philly"). His wood block printed chintz panel prints were used to make center medallion designs similar to Indian palampores. These panels were cut apart and used to make cut-out chintz appliqué quilts.
