Pragmatism (the End Justifies the Means) in Sports
There is an intricate relationship between philosophy-ethics and sports. In any sporting game which is played by conscious beings and as long as those beings have to acquire knowledge which does not come to them automatically or was not preprogrammed into them like computer software at birth, then those beings will need some form of guide to help them along their way. That guide is philosophy. Entailed within that philosophy is a code of right and wrong, i.e., a code of ethics. That code is based on some standard of value, something that said code is implemented in order to gain or keep. That value is man. Man engages in sporting activities and therefore, needs this code (on many complex levels) to prosper within the sport as well as within life. Every conscious being that plays sports, whether they are consciously aware of it or not, engages in an ethical pursuit. Those who aren’t aware of it are the ones that are the best candidates to fall victim to unethical practices of coaches and other players (not to mention officials, parents, and businessmen within sports and so on ad infinitum…)
